Erectile Dysfunction Q&A

What is erectile dysfunction?

Having erectile dysfunction (ED) means you can’t have an erection or stay erect long enough to have sex. Erectile dysfunction is a common problem that occasionally affects most men, often as a result of problems like fatigue, stress, relationship struggles, or drinking too much alcohol.

If your erectile dysfunction becomes a frequent or regular problem, it may be caused by a health condition.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Many possible health conditions cause erectile dysfunction, including:

  • Low testosterone
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Vascular disease (clogged arteries)
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Neurologic disease
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Obesity

You need a healthy blood flow to have an erection. As a result, any substance or condition that limits circulation can cause erectile dysfunction.

For example, if you smoke, tobacco damages your blood vessels and high cholesterol leads to clogged arteries, including the arteries delivering blood to your penis.

How is erectile dysfunction treated?

Your Urology Specialists of Cypress provider takes a multifaceted approach to treating erectile dysfunction. The first step is treating any underlying conditions affecting your ability to have an erection. They may also recommend one of the following treatments that directly target ED:

Oral medications

Medications like Viagra®, Cialis®, Levitra®, and Stendra® cause an erection by blocking enzymes that tighten blood vessels in your penis. That makes the vessels relax, increasing blood flow and giving you a strong erection after you feel sexually aroused.

Hormone replacement therapy

Men with low testosterone need hormone replacement therapy to restore normal levels.

Intracavernosal and intraurethral medications

Your provider may recommend a medication called Alprostadil® that causes an erection. You may inject the medication into your penis or place a suppository into your urethra.

Low-intensity shockwave therapy (LIST)

LIST uses sound waves to promote blood vessel growth and boost the blood flow to your penis.

Vacuum erection device

This device goes over your penis, then creates a vacuum that improves blood flow and causes an erection.

Surgical treatment

You can also choose to have a surgical procedure to implant an inflatable or semirigid prosthetic inside your penis. You create an erection by bending a semirigid device or pressing a pump (implanted in your scrotum) for the inflatable device.
